Why stonework here.

The High Country is a dry-stone tradition in a wall that is still standing.

Walk any mile of the Blue Ridge in Avery, Mitchell, or Yancey County and you will cross a wall, climb a set of stone steps, pass a chimney without a house, or stumble into the foundation of a barn that went down seventy years ago. The stone is everywhere. The walls are everywhere. The masons — fewer now — are still here.

On the term

Dry-stone is a wall of fitted rock with no mortar; mortared stone uses lime or cement between the joints. The southern Appalachians run both: dry-stone on the high pastures where hauling lime was impractical; mortared stone on the homes, chimneys, and barns of the settled valleys.

On the region

The High Country — Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Newland, Spruce Pine, Burnsville — sits on a shelf of Precambrian rock from Linville to Mount Mitchell. The same shelf that made the region hard to farm is the reason it has the most varied building stone in the eastern United States. Four rocks dominate: granite, gneiss, mica schist, and quartzite.

The dry-stone tradition.

From Scotland and Ulster to the southern Appalachians, one craft over two mountains.

The dry-stone wall tradition came west with the Scots-Irish in the eighteenth century and re-rooted in the southern Appalachians almost without modification. A wall in Galloway and a wall in Watauga County share one principle: a wide base, a battered (inward-leaning) face, through-stones that span the full wall, and a tight cope on top that sheds water. The High Country wall is shorter on average than its Scottish counterpart — stone is heavier here, the fields are smaller, and the freeze-thaw cycle is harder on the work — but the lineage is direct.

How the tradition arrived

Migration ran through the Pennsylvania valleys and down the Great Wagon Road into the Carolina backcountry between 1740 and 1790. The settlers were Lowland Scots, Ulster Scots, northern English, and a thin German fringe. They brought cattle, the Presbyterian church, the fiddle, and the practice of clearing fieldstone into linear boundaries that doubled as livestock fence. By 1820 the pattern was local; by 1860 it was the regional default.

Celtic and Irish influence

The Irish and Scots carried two regional wall types — the Galloway (double dry-stone with a rubble hearting) and the dyke of the eastern Highlands — and both are visible in the High Country today. The Galloway survives most clearly in remote cow pastures around Roan Mountain and the upper Watauga; the dyke form is closer to the mortared boundary stones along the older roads of Ashe and Watauga Counties.

The craftsmen of the BRP.

Highland stone masons who came south to build a park.

The Blue Ridge Parkway was built between 1935 and 1987, and the men who set its retaining walls, overlook piers, bridge abutments, and tunnel portals were, by every credible account, predominantly Appalachian-born masons trained in the dry-stone and mortared traditions of their grandfathers. Several crew chiefs were first- or second-generation immigrants from the Scottish Highlands and Ulster, brought in for the heavier walls in the northern sections — Doughton, Blowing Rock, the Linn Cove Viaduct approach.

What they built

The parkway walls are mortared — the contract required it — but the through-stone, batter, and cope all derive directly from dry-stone practice. The same crew would lay a dry-stone cattle wall behind the house and a federal-spec retaining wall on the road in the same week. The parkway is the last large-scale American construction project in which the dominant workforce was trained in traditional dry-stone methods.

Why it matters

The BRP generation is the last in which dry-stone was the daily practice of a working mason rather than a specialty skill. The men who built the walls at Beacon Heights, Rough Butt, and the Tanbark Tunnel approaches in the 1940s and 1950s grew up laying walls on their family's farms. The young men who repair those walls today learned the craft in a workshop.

Caesar's Head — the most-photographed wall in the region.

The Caesar's Head wall runs along a bench on the Blue Ridge Escarpment near the South Carolina state line and is the conventional property boundary wall built by the early settlers of the Jones Gap corridor. It is single-face (one dressed face, one rough back against the slope), unbonded with mortar, and battered at roughly 1:6. It is the cleanest surviving example of a regional dry-stone boundary wall in the southern Appalachians.

The interesting thing about Caesar's Head is that it is the wrong shape for the terrain. A wall that long on that steep a bench should have stepped in grade; this one runs straight, which means the masons cut the wall's line into the slope rather than the other way around. That cost them a day per rod and is the kind of choice only made by masons who are confident the wall will outlive them.

Caesar's Head is, by every structural feature, a Highland dyke translated into gneiss. Single-face, mortared at the copings only, with a hand-pitched rough back. It is not a Galloway (which has two dressed faces and a rubble heart). The single-face form makes sense on a boundary against a slope: the dressed face is the public face, the rough back holds the bank, and the heart is whatever the slope gave up.

An honest note on fieldstone vs. quarry stone: most surviving High Country walls are fieldstone — the rock that came out when a farmer dug a foundation or plowed a field. Quarry stone enters the record after 1890, when rail access to limestone mortar made mortared walls affordable. Fieldstone is irregular (masons had to fit it); quarry stone is rectilinear (masons had to lay it). Both traditions are still alive.

The quarrying tradition.

The quarrying tradition in the High Country is older than the wall tradition. Granite was extracted in Surry County as early as 1770, and the small mountain quarries at Crossnore, Blowing Rock, and the south flank of Grandfather Mountain were producing dimension stone for the regional trade by 1850. The dominant method for two centuries was plug and feather: a row of hand-drilled holes, a pair of tapered steel wedges (the feathers) set into each hole, and a flat plug driven between them with a hammer until the stone split clean along the drilled line.

The quarry cycle

A traditional quarry ran on the following cycle: locate a seam of clean rock with a workable grain; strip the overburden by hand; expose a bench; drill a line of 1-inch holes, 4 inches deep, every 6 inches; set feathers and plugs; drive them in sequence until the bench splits as a single slab; dress the slab in place; load on a wagon. A two-man team could produce 200 square feet of finished flagstone in a good week.

The steps and stairways.

Stone treads on the steepest ground in the eastern United States.

The High Country is steep, and the steps that climb its hillsides, hollows, and trail systems are, with very few exceptions, stone. The tradition divides into three forms: the mortared rubble flight (a road to a farmhouse porch), the dry-set fieldstone stair (a barn to a pasture), and the dressed-stone trail stair (the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, the BRP, the state parks). All three use the same material — local granite or gneiss — and all rely on one structural trick: each step is set deep enough that its own weight, plus the backfill behind it, holds it in place.

The trail-stair tradition in the High Country is a direct descendant of the BRP work: a 7-inch rise, 11- to 14-inch run, 18-inch tread minimum, and a stone at least 8 inches thick. The stair is battered uphill so water drains across rather than pooling on the tread. The flight is pinned by the through-stones of the underlying wall; the wall's copings are continued as the stair's risers. A well-built flight will outlast the trail it climbs.

Barns, cemeteries & the dead architecture.

The other regional stonework: farm outbuildings, grave markers, and the markers of the unmarked.

Stone barns

The stone barns of the High Country — most in the upper Watauga, the New River valley, and the remote coves of Avery and Mitchell Counties — are mortared fieldstone structures, typically 30 by 40 feet, two stories, cattle below and hay above. The masonry is roughly coursed, the through-stones granite, the corners quoined, and the roof plate bedded directly into the wall. Surviving examples cluster on farms settled before the railroad, when masons were local and stone was free.

Cemetery stones

The regional gravestone tradition runs from the fieldstone markers of the early Scots-Irish settlers (rough, undressed, often uninscribed) through the marble commercial markers of the post-1880 era, to a small revival of local granite and gneiss markers cut by regional stone cutters in the twentieth century. The interesting form is the fieldstone marker — a heavy, undressed stone, sometimes footed with a smaller stone at each end, set at the head of the grave. These are the only surviving trace of many of the region's earliest settlers and are best read as the dry-stone wall tradition continued into the cemetery.

Tools, then and now.

The kit a regional mason still keeps on the truck.

Traditional kit

The traditional dry-stone kit fits on a hand-cart and weighs about 40 pounds: a mash hammer, a waller's hammer, three chisels, a long-handled plugging hammer, a 4-foot spirit level, a line, and a leather apron. A skilled mason with this kit could lay 8 to 12 linear feet of finished 3-foot wall a day. The kit has not changed in 200 years.

Modern kit

The modern mason adds a small angle grinder with diamond blades, a 4-inch right-angle grinder for dressing, a 1-ton electric chain hoist for setting large stones, a laser level, and a pair of battery-powered chipping hammers. The grinder has cut the time required to dress a stone by roughly 70% and is the reason a modern mason can out-produce a 1950s mason by a factor of three. The traditional kit is still preferred for finish work and any wall where the dressed face must match the existing character.

The Stone Trust of NC.

Where the craft is being kept, taught, and certified in 2026.

The Stone Trust of North Carolina — formed in the late 2010s as an outgrowth of the broader Stone Trust network — runs a working classroom on a preserved farm in the upper Watauga and a satellite workshop in Burnsville. It certifies dry-stone masons in four grades (Initial, Intermediate, Advanced, Master) using the British Dry Stone Walling Association curriculum adapted for Appalachian stone. The certification test is a timed wall build on a real wall, judged against published standards for batter, through-stone spacing, cope construction, and hearting.

What a beginner's day looks like

The trust runs two-day workshops near-monthly: morning on stone sorting and tool safety, afternoon on the batter frame and the heart of the wall. Day two is a build day — a 6-foot section of single-face wall, begun and finished, against a clock. The trust certifies roughly 30 masons a year at the Initial level, half at the Intermediate, and a handful at the Master level.

Why the trust matters

The trust is the reason the craft still has a labor pool. Without it, the regional tradition would have collapsed by 2010: the last of the BRP-trained masons would have retired, and the folk-school transmission that produced their replacements would have ended. It is the only organization in the southeastern US running a continuous, standards-based dry-stone certification program.
